We were trying to complete the hike and make it back for the last tram so we rushed it, and I did end up with mild altitude sickness on the way back. You need microspikes. Not sure if the rangers altered the trail, but there is one section right after the Round Valley Campground that the trail and signage clearly deviated from the trail shown on our handheld GPS, Google Maps, and All Trails.
